Gran Canaria
A ‘Continent in Miniature’ with sensational beaches, superb weather, excellent hotels and duty free shopping.
Third largest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria lies only some 60 miles off the coast of Africa, and the extensive sand dunes in the south lend a real Sahara-like flavour to the island. The island’s resorts are as varied as Gran Canaria’s physical characteristics, which include some magnificent unspoiled scenery in the interior.
Concentrated in the sunny south of the island, the first of the resorts is San Agustin, a relatively peaceful spot which has beaches, a large shopping centre with a wide choice of restaurants and shops, while at night there’s a Casino and a spectacular dinner show.
Just a five minute ride away is Playa del Ingles, the major resort. It’s a big resort with everything to match. Big shopping centres, lots of entertainments and sports facilities, just about every kind of restaurant you could imagine plus a long beach that leads to the massive sand dunes which stretch round to the lighthouse at Maspalomas. Our chosen hotels enjoy some of the best locations, adjacent to or on the golden sands while being close enough to the night-life and shopping, when you want it.
At Maspalomas, famous for its sand dunes, and adjacent Playa Meloneras, in the vicinity of the lighthouse, is a cluster of most of the islands best hotels. Here is a good selection of restaurants, as well as shopping centres. More shops are to be found at the nearby Faro 2 Shopping Centre and, of course, at Playa del Ingles. The Maspalomas golf course is nearby, as is the challenging Salobre course adjacent to which an impressive 5 star Sheraton hotel has recently been constructed.
A little further to the west lie the developing resorts of Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan. The latter has a picturesque marina fronted by a variety of little shops, cafes and restaurants, and is the setting for a splendid large 4 star superior hotel which we include for the first time in our programme.
Las Palmas, the island’s capital on the north-eastern tip of Gran Canaria, is the major city and port of the Province with superb shops and a great deal of interest. It is well worth a visit for a day’s shopping. The highly-rated Bandama Golf Course is just 14 kms south of Las Palmas.
Do try to take a day or two to visit some of the old towns and villages in the centre and north of the island. Tejeda has panoramic views from the terrace of its parador. Arucas, set in an immense valley, and Galdar, court of the ancient Canary Kings, have architecture and colours in complete contrast to the south’s holiday resorts.
In Las Palmas and Arucas spectacular carpets of flowers are laid for Corpus Christi and it’s worth checking for other local fiestas during your stay. Throughout the year, some town or village is almost sure to be celebrating with colourful parades.
It is also worth mentioning that because of the demand from northern Europe in the winter months, prices for hotels are at their peak between November and Easter. In the summer months, on the other hand, even 5 star hotels represent incredible value-for-money.
And finally, a reminder that the duty free status the Canaries enjoy means many shopping bargains are to be found.
